Broadly the approaches presented above can be differentiated into two groups: those methods which assess scientific inquiry as an abstracted form of knowledge that could inform a range of studies and those which require students to perform a structured scientific task. The latter group can be further differentiated between the assessment of practical knowledge of instruments and measures and those that require different levels of problem solving. A review of all these approaches to assessment and the way they define scientific inquiry presents an array of knowledge types that collectively seem to cover the nature of scientific inquiry.
