The length of the treatment and the neutralisation procedure (with and without ammonium hydroxide) were considered. The treatment with sulphuric acid resulted in the sulphonation of the butadiene units of the rubber and the creation of highly conjugated C:C bonds, which produced a change in colour of the thermoplastic elastomers. The treatment also produced a decrease in the TS and the EB of the rubbers. This indicated that the treatment with sulphuric acid was not restricted to the rubber surface but also produced a bulk modification.
